Classic Varsity Jackets - Genuine Wool & Leather, Made to Order
A classic varsity jacket also called a classic letterman jacket is the original silhouette: a structured Melton wool body, contrast leather sleeves, rib-knit collar and cuffs, and a snap-button front. Letter Culture builds this construction the traditional way, with genuine 24-ounce Melton wool and genuine cowhide leather, never a synthetic substitute and never a zipper. Every jacket ships blank and ready for your patches, embroidery and colors the starting point for something entirely yours.
What Defines a Classic Varsity Jacket
The classic build is the one every other Letter Culture style is measured against: a structured Melton wool body, genuine leather sleeves in a contrasting color, striped rib-knit collar and cuffs, and a snap-button closure — never a zipper. This is a deliberate construction choice, not a stylistic default; a snap-button front is the traditional letterman closure, and it's the standard across every jacket we build, in every color and every collection.
Every jacket you see below ships as a blank, unpatched base the foundation for your own chenille letter, included in the base price, and your exact color combination. Embroidery and additional patches are priced per addition when you design your jacket.
All Wool The Structured Melton Body
A single-material build the full structure and weight of genuine 24-ounce Melton wool, sleeves included, without the contrast leather.
Popular Color Pairings
Some combinations come up more than any other. Black and White is the sharpest, highest-contrast classic build. Red and White is the most traditional collegiate pairing, going back to the earliest letterman jackets. Blue and White reads clean and classic, a common choice for school colors. For something bolder, Green, Purple and Pink pairings each bring their own distinct look — see each color's own page for the full range of combinations we build. Every pairing shown above is available across all three sections on this page, and any combination not shown can be built to order.
Every Jacket Starts Blank, Built to Your Spec
The jackets shown above ship blank a genuine wool-and-leather foundation, not yet patched or personalized. From there, every classic jacket includes:
- One chenille letter patch, in any letter and color
- Your exact color combination across our full range
Embroidered names, graduation year bars, and additional patches are priced per addition, whether you're building one jacket or ordering for a full team. See our Custom Jacket page to start designing, or our Team & Bulk Orders page for group orders.
Caring for Your Classic Varsity Jacket
Never machine wash genuine Melton wool or leather spot-clean instead, and condition leather sleeves two to three times a year to prevent cracking. Full breakdown in our Jacket Care Guide.
Finding Your Size
Every classic jacket is available across our full men's and women's size range. See our Size Guide for complete measurements, or our Kids Size Chart if you're shopping for a child.
Classic Varsity Jacket Questions, Answered
What's the difference between "All Wool," "All Leather," and "Wool + Leather"?
All Wool uses Melton wool for the entire jacket, sleeves included. All Leather uses genuine cowhide leather throughout. Wool + Leather is the traditional two-tone build — a wool body with contrast leather sleeves. All three include the same customization options.
Does Letter Culture make a classic varsity jacket with a zipper?
No. Every Letter Culture jacket, in every color and every collection, uses a snap-button front closure. This is a deliberate construction choice, not an oversight — it's the traditional letterman closure, and we don't offer a zipper alternative.
Is the leather genuine, or is there a faux option?
Every leather sleeve or body we build is genuine cowhide. Letter Culture doesn't offer a faux or vinyl leather tier — if it's leather, it's real.
What does "blank" or "basic" varsity jacket mean?
A blank or basic varsity jacket is the unpatched base jacket wool and leather construction with no chenille letters, embroidery or personalization yet added. Every jacket shown on this page starts this way; one chenille letter is included in the base price, and additional patches and embroidery are added to your specification at their own listed cost.
What wool weight does Letter Culture use?
24-ounce Melton wool as standard, with other weights available on request for a different feel or warmth level.
Are varsity jackets still in style?
Yes. The classic varsity silhouette has stayed in continuous use since its origin, moving between school and team wear, streetwear, and everyday fashion for decades without going out of style. It remains one of the most consistently searched jacket styles year over year.
Can adults wear a classic varsity jacket, not just students or athletes?
Yes. While the style originated in school and team culture, a classic varsity jacket is worn well beyond that context today — it's a genuine, ageless outerwear piece rather than something limited to current students or athletes.
Can I order a classic varsity jacket for my whole team or school?
Yes. See our Team & Bulk Orders page — group orders are coordinated with individual sizing collected for each member, so every jacket in the order fits properly.
How much does a classic varsity jacket cost?
Wool + Leather and All Leather builds start from $190. All Wool builds start from $150. One chenille letter patch is included in the base price; additional patches and embroidery are priced per addition.
How long does a custom classic varsity jacket take to arrive?
Production takes 5 to 8 business days, shipping takes 11 to 12 business days, for a total delivery estimate of 16 to 20 business days. Every order ships free worldwide with full tracking.
