VARSITY JACKET QUESTIONS, ANSWERED
What's the difference between a varsity jacket and a letterman jacket?
Nothing structurally — the terms are used interchangeably in practice, though technically "letterman" refers to a jacket carrying an earned achievement letter, while "varsity" is the broader style category. Letter Culture builds the same genuine construction under either name.
What is a varsity jacket actually made of?
A traditional varsity jacket uses a structured Melton wool body, genuine leather sleeves, chenille letter patches, rib-knit collar and cuffs, and a snap-button front closure. See our full Materials Guide for the complete material-by-material breakdown.
How do you earn a varsity letter?
Requirements vary by school, but most involve reaching the varsity level in a sport or activity and meeting a participation threshold, commonly playing in roughly half to two-thirds of a season's games. Some schools extend the tradition beyond athletics to academics, performing arts and other activities.
Why is it called a varsity jacket?
"Varsity" refers to a school's top competitive level, and the jacket style takes its name from being awarded to varsity-level athletes and students. See our full Varsity Jacket History for the complete origin story, dating back to 1865.
What should I read first if I'm new here?
